If you're looking for a rim blown flute in a certain key, made of a certain wood, in one of the scales that I already offer, I'll be glad to make one for you (assuming I can find the wood you want — and assuming it's not one of the few woods I'm horribly allergic to).
Keys currently available: G3 to E4
Scales currently available: Southwestern 6 Hole (Pueblo/Basketmaker/Anasazi), Desert 4 Hole (Mojave), Pentatonic Minor 5 Hole (Shakuhachi), and Akebono 5 Hole. I've done flutes in a few other scales as well (Pentatonic Major, Persian, Egyptian, Celtic, etc.), but they've been much less popular. Key choices may be limited for certain scales. If you're interested in having me make a flute with a custom scale that I haven't done in the past, I'll certainly consider it, although with a few caveats. Prototyping new instruments takes a lot of time, and that can end up being quite costly. Let me know what you have in mind and I'll be happy to discuss it with you.
Wood choices: Basswood, Bocote, Bubinga, Cherry, Cypress, Eastern Red Cedar, East Indian Rosewood, Ebony, Granadillo, Lignum Vitae, Mahogany, Maple, Osage Orange, Padauk, Purpleheart, Sapele, Spanish Cedar, Walnut. Not all woods are available at all times or in all keys. Other woods may be available upon request.
Price range: My rim blown flutes in my current standard design are typically $250, although price may vary somewhat depending upon wood choice. Carving, painting, stone inlay, and woodburning can be done as well, although that will increase the cost of the instrument.
Turnaround time: Please be aware that custom orders are added to my waiting list, and I work on them as time permits. During certain times of the year, I'm traveling almost non-stop to festivals, so I'm hardly in the workshop at all for long stretches. I aim to get things done as quickly as I can, but my top priority is quality, and I'm never going to rush anything out the door if it isn't right. Given my current backlog, custom orders may take 3 to 6 months to complete.
Please get in touch and I'll be happy to discuss your project with you. Once I know what you have in mind, I'll be able to give you a more accurate time and cost estimate. Thanks!
